Anaerobic digestion is a complex biochemical process in which several groups of anaerobic and facultative organisms simultaneously assimilate and break down organic matter.

Proper control of anaerobic sludge digestion is based on:

• time and temperature
• mixing
• pH and alkalinity
• gas production
